How do you market a book that doesn’t quite fit a genre – or is a mash up of more than one genre?

We talk on the SPA all the time about the importance of knowing what genre/sub genre you’re writing and what reader expectations for that genre are. But what happens if you’ve written a spectacular mashup of genres? Or you wanted to write a romance cross memoir? There’s no doubt it can be harder to market an off-genre book, so where do you start?

Questions to consider:

  1. Is it one or a series?
  2. Can you identify which genres it straddles?
  3. Is it worth editing it?
  4. Is it affecting your other sales?
  5. Could it work as bonus content for existing series?
  6. Is the cover missing the mark?
  7. Do you need more reviews?
  8. Is it a mashup because you don’t understand genre expectations?
  9. Beware the sunk cost fallacy – writing more books isn’t always the answer
  10. For a lot of writers, getting their first books out of their system is needed
