Madison advocated for Black adolescent mental health.

More about Madison:

Madison Garrett is a 17-year old changemaker and Ambassador Girl Scout of Troop 2261. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Madison began Girl Scouts at age 8 in Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Since the first time she recited the Girl Scout Promise, Madison passionately lives out the mission of Girl Scouts. Receiving her Silver Award for raising awareness for environmental crises and earning her Gold Award for advocating for Black adolescent mental health, Madison aspires to make a difference any way she can.

For her Girl Scout Gold Award, Madison brought attention to the often-unknown issue of the rising suicide rate of Black children. Advocating for the cause in numerous ways, including speaking about self-esteem to the little Black girls of her Girl Scout Troop 2261, writing articles for The New York Beacon about Black mental health, and hosting a mental health seminar for all ages, Madison became determined to destigmatize the taboo of mental health within the Black community. As 2021 Girl Scout Future Woman of Distinction, she continues to spread her message, highlighting the importance of Black mental health on television, in publications, or simply speaking to her sister Scouts.

Entering Columbia University in the fall, Madison can’t wait to continuously use her voice to raise awareness for disregarded and overlooked issues-including the matter of Black mental health and the increasing suicide rate of Black children.
