There were some rules in the early 1900's when it came to caring for mental patients, but not many. Also, the link between mental illness and the brain was very misunderstood.

Walter Freeman was a neurologist in the mid 20th century who wanted to leave behind a great legacy for curing mental illness. He made the history books all right, but not necessarily for doing something great. In this episode we dive into how Freeman got started and how his research led to one of the most infamous treatments of all time, the ice pick lobotomy. Did he really want to cure mental illness or was he blinded by fame?
